The City of Sydney is opening public pools for free this weekend as a heatwave sweeps the country.
This is a fantastic idea. The municipality will open six aquatic centres on Saturday as temperatures are expected to reach the low-40s.
As well as free access, visitors will also be able to participate in free fitness classes – including yoga and spin – and advice from health experts visiting on the day.
There should be more of it, especially in country areas with limited access to open water.
When I was growing up half the town practically lived at the local pool, but these days when I return to visit, I often have it to myself.
I guess many people have pools of their own and better air conditioning now, but in the 70s those things were pretty rare.
What do you think, should local councils offer free pool days when the mercury rises?
