Should politicians be forced to retire at a certain age?

Looking across at America and it’s hard not to get the feeling some politicians should probably retire gracefully, and soon.

Many politicians stay in the job well beyond retirement age. Bob Katter is currently the oldest serving federal parliamentarian at 79. Is that too old? Joe Biden is 81 and Donald Trump is 78.

On one hand, if people are still voting them it, I guess they deserve to stay there.
On the other hand, I’d personally much rather a younger person in touch with modern life as my representative.

Many of these long-serving politicians haven’t had to deal with the real world in decades, should they be representing their constituents?

They have subsidised travel, meals, postage, staff entitlements and a healthy pension scheme, all things we’d love to have, but can’t.

In their own defence, they claim they often give up lucrative careers to become politicians and should be rewarded for their time. But is that true? John Howard worked for a small law firm before he entered politics. Anthony Albanese has done nothing other than politics. What career did he give up?

And are they hooked on the power and money? And if so, is that good enough motivation to be leading our country?

Do you think politicians should retire at a set age?

Bob Katter is my federal member and although I generally support his party I do think he is too old to be effective in the job. Now when he speaks he rambles and goes way off topic like Biden and Trump.
Everyone is different and that makes it hard to put a one age fits all on retirement but from life experience I think 70 would be a fair and reasonable upper age limit for politicians.

I think all pollies should retire at the same age as everyone else. Max aged 65-70.

There should be an age limit, possibly around 70. Most pollies are career politicians and most have never worked in what we call “the real world”. Some of them probably could be earning more in their respective areas if they have a degree, but they know if they hang around long enough they’ll pick up some juicy job via the government.

I believe politicians should retire at the election prior to their 70th birthday. I also believe that there should be a maximum of three terms in parliament therefore giving new “blood” and people with “life” experience into our government.

Every person wanting to stand for election to Council, State and Federal seats should be required to submit a Resume of their relevant experience and qualifications for the job.
Preferably with real life employment or business experience and Tertiary educated. People with a vision for the future of our country.
Too many are there for the perks that go with the job and the pension at the end of their term.
