It seems common sense has prevailed and Fifa has backed down on its plan to have Saudi Arabia sponsor the Women’s World Club in Australia and New Zealand this year.
I find it odd it was even an idea in the first place.
Why would you even consider accepting sponsorship for a women’s event from a country not known to have the best reputation – to put it mildly – when it comes to women and human rights in general?
Well, if it’s Fifa, let’s face it, it was probably motivated by nothing more than a cold, hard grab for cash.
Well done to the players and countries who kicked up a bit of stink about it, especially the hosting countries who said they were ‘shocked and disappointed’ by the reports Fifa was set to announce the deal.
Says a lot about the backroom deals done when even the host countries don’t know what’s going on.
But I’m still going to shake my head for a while that Fifa even thought this was a good idea.
Do you think Fifa made the right decision?
