Should we drive with our lights on during the day?

Monash University wants to mandate daytime running lights (DRLs) for all Australian vehicles.

The university found DLRs reduce non-night multi-vehicle crash involvement by 8.8 per cent.

DRLs are designed to automatically switch on when a vehicle is driven to increase the visibility of a vehicle to other road users during the day.

Lead author of the study Dr Angelo DiElia said mandating DRLs “would likely lead to reductions in the overall crash risk of the [Australian] fleet”.

DRLs have been mandatory in Europe for all new cars and small delivery vans since 2011 and for trucks and buses since 2012.

Do you think DRLs are a good idea? Do you use your lights during the day?

The vehicles that I have had since 2007 have all had Daytime Running Lights, as do just about ALL new cars. It may be the fact that ALL cars have the capability, but it’s whether or not the Driver enables them.

In my opinion daylight running lights are not considered sufficient. Headlights (no high beam) are mandatory and have been mandatory in Europe now for many years.
