Australia has chosen to abandon its one-day international series against Afghanistan over that country’s treatment of women and the decision has been polarising.
The series was to be played in neutral territory in the United Arab Emirates in March but Cricket Australia has announced the three-match series will not go ahead.
The decision is in reaction to the Taliban placing further restrictions on women, including barring them from education, sporting and employment opportunities.
Australia will forfeit 30 competition points for the series.
However, many are saying not to mix sport and politics.
Is it that simple? I suspect CA would have consulted with the team before making the decision, so at the very least the playing group support the decision, and isn’t that the main thing?
Should politics and sport remain separate? Is it even possible?
