Thousands of luxury vehicles are being recalled over a software issue impacting the steering wheel.
The recall notice from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts affects all Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles manufactured in 2022 and 2023. It says that 4382 cars affected.
The recall follows a recall of Tesla vehicles in the US late last year due to a risk of doors being unlocked and opening during a crash.
The Australian recall is due to a software issue that causes the steering wheel to become “notchy” in colder temperatures. It says there is no immediate safety risk, stating: “The defect will not affect the performance of the vehicle.”
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact Tesla to make an appointment to have the vehicle software version inspected and updated.
The recall is unrelated to the recent stop-delivery of the 2024 Tesla Model 3, which has to do with the electric sedan lacking a top tether anchor point for its middle rear seat.
