The NSW state government has introduced tough new penalties aimed squarely at drivers of petrol vehicles.
The state is introducing $2200 fines for any non-electric vehicle parked in an electric vehicle (EV) charging bay. The practice of parking a petrol car in an EV bay is known as ‘ICE-ing’ the bay, which stands for ‘internal combustion engine’.
Parking in the bay means an EV is not able to use the charger.
It has some NSW motorists up in arms, but the state is not the first to introduce such infringements – but fines in NSW are much bigger than other jurisdictions.
In Victoria, the fine for ICE-ing an EV is a maximum of 2 penalty units, which at the moment totals just $369.84, while in Queensland the fine is a bit higher, sitting at a maximum of 20 penalty units, or $2875.
Do you think it’s fair EVs get their own charging spots?
