While the world mourns the death of Matthew Perry his unfortunate demise is a tragic reminder of one very simple safety tip that could save your life.

Never go in a spa or pool by yourself if you have suffered from health problems or are elderly.

Spas are especially dangerous as exposing yourself to elevated temperatures over time can lead to drowsiness, disorientation and even heat stress. This can be made worse if you have taken drugs or alcohol, or have heart disease or other cardiac problems.

Poor motor function caused by one too many drinks can also lead to slips, falls and other injuries, so for your safety, skip the alcohol when soaking in your hot tub.

It’s recommended to spend no longer than 15 minutes in a spa.

And less fatal, but also yukky is heated spas are the ideal temperature for germs to breed. So if you have an open wound, infectious skin problem or warts, skip the spa until you are completely healed. You are not only potentially making yourself worse, but also exposing others to infections.

Spas are very often also not cleaned properly, so you are also at risk of exposing yourself to parasites, irritation from bodily fluids, bacteria and even Legionnaires’ disease.

Do you use a spa often? Have you thought about the dangers?
