A teacher has anonymously shared a list of the strangest names in her class this year, giving a glimpse into the truly deranged thinking of some modern parents.

Giving your child an unusual name, spelling or pronunciation is nothing new, but today’s mums and dads are taking it to a new level.

Top of the list of weird names was Syakyra, which is apparently pronounced ‘Shakira’.
The rest of the list had some real shockers, included Rhydah, Presillar, Christisarah, Anjewel’Lea and Biar Biar.

Others had more common names, but with very uncommon spelling including Deklyn, Alarna, Aaryah, Angel-Lee and Karleb.

Wanting your child to stand out from the crowd is one thing, but surely these parents are dooming their kids to a life of teasing and not being taken seriously?

What’s the worst name you’ve ever heard?

Years ago when I was first teaching there weren’t many unusual names one of the mothers complained that I was pronouncing her child’s name the wrong way.
It was Sherrel and i had pronounced it like Cheryl whereas it was Sher el.
I really feel for teachers these days.

My son’s name is Allyn, which in Welsh means ‘Exit’, but it’s also my father’s name (Alan), but my ex didn’t want such a ‘plain’ name.

My friend’s son has recently become a father for the second time and they have called the boy Kit. Imagine what nick names he’s going to get.

Kit isn’t a common name these days, but it’s always been the short version of Christopher (for a male; Katherine for a girl).

I agree, It’s absolutely terrible what some parents lumber their poor kids with.

That soccer player who scored Australia’s last goal on Wednesday – her name is Courtney but the poor girl’s parents spelled it Cortnee. Horrible!

A while ago a young new mother named her baby after a luxury Australian car. When I was helping her register the name with correct spelling, twice. The mother stubbornly refused to spell the (car) name correctly and informed me that Centrelink was happy with the spelling. So sad as the mother was proudly insisting the child was named after the beautiful luxury car. Thank goodness we can change our own names once we are older and wiser than our parents. But sad to have endured bullying in our younger years.
