Good manners and common sense are not handed out in equal portions (I think we all know that!) – and that is upsetting many Aussie beachgoers.
A survey conducted by e-learning platform Preply asked over 1000 Australians who go to the beach regularly to share their opinions on ‘beach etiquette’ – essentially the behaviour that has them shaking their heads.
These were the most common and annoying violations:
Bringing pets to the beach – 55%
Swimming in undesignated areas – 48%
Public displays of affection – 46%
Feeding seagulls – 44%
Littering – 41%
Flicking sand by walking with thongs on the beach – 39%
Talking too loudly – 38%
Sitting too close – 38%
Smoking – 37%
Surfing in undesignated areas – 36%
Respondents also emphasised the importance of beachgoers being environmentally aware with complaints about feeding seagulls (44%) and littering (41%).
Our top five beaches for poor etiquette were:
Bondi, Sydney – 26%
Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast – 14%
St Kilda, Melbourne – 13%
Manly, Sydney – 11%
Main Beach, Byron Bay – 6%
And the top five beaches for good etiquette:
Brighton Beach, Brighton, Vic – 14%
Mooloolaba, Sunshine Coast, Qld – 13%
Cable Beach, Broome, WA – 12%
Glenelg, Adelaide – 11%
Cottesloe Beach, Perth – 10%
