The cash rate continues to climb in a bid to curb inflation, and belts are tightened further. But there are some things that we refuse to live without.
I imagine a lot of people would say coffee. Or chocolate. A poster on Reddit said it was Dare Ice Coffee – “It’s very addictive.”
Another said: “Coffee – it’s just $4-$6 and gives me joy.”
But Yahoo News finance expert Effie Zahos did the sums and said a $4.50 coffee every day amounted to $65,700 over 40 years – without taking into account inflation.
Another popular item was quality toilet paper – “The day I buy cheap, scratchy toilet paper is the day I end it all.”
Beer, wine and good food were also right up there – “For us, I would say it’s beer and wine and cooking good meals at home.”
Another said: “Beer. Even if it has to be the cheap stuff from Aldi from time to time. I am considering brewing my own soon too.”
Others online said cheese (and those prices have gone through the roof), peanut butter and getting your hair and nails done.
A quick poll of the office backed up the coffee option – “If I could only afford instant, I’d swap to tea” – while others (female of course) said nice moisturiser. Good butter was also tops for some.
What wouldn’t you give up?
