New research from Monash University has revealed people who work shift work eat more on average, and have a poorer diet, compared with day workers.
The researchers found rotating shift workers consumed an extra 264 kilojoules every 24 hours.
“An increase of just 100 kilojoules each day can lead to a 0.5 kilogram weight gain over a year,” the study says.
It also found shift workers displayed more unhealthy eating habits, including “irregular meals, more snacking or eating at night, less core food consumption and more eating of discretionary foods”.
