Can we please rein in tipping in Australia?
I paid for a restaurant meal by card last week and was confronted by a screen with my tipping options, the least being $10 and finally, in a smaller box down the bottom was my option not to tip.
I did not tip.
It was one of those restaurants where you order by phone, so all the serving staff had to do was bring it out. I’m happy to tip for good service, but it’s a bit cheeky to expect a tip for carrying a plate.
I’m always a bit suss about if it ends up with the staff in such circumstances anyway. I only ever tip cash.
We don’t need to import America’s tipping culture. The Australian minimum wage is much more healthy than the US counterpart.
Even Americans are fed up with it. I have been reading stories about tipping expected when picking up fast food, service charges on top of expected tipping and an expected 20 per cent tip on top of your meal price. More, if it’s a fancy restaurant.
By all means tip if you want to, but let’s not bring in the expectation to tip. If you are in a business that relies on human labour and you can’t afford that labour, then you shouldn’t be in business.
