It’s been in the news that 265 trees were destroyed in an affluent part of Sydney’s north shore.
It’s horrifying, but the real mystery is how they got away with it. How do you kill 265 trees in an area covering roughly 14 tennis courts, and no-one notices it until too late?
The trees were variously poisoned or chopped down with chainsaws at a waterfront reserve in Castle Cove.
Prime suspects will be the people behind the reserve who want to improve their view, but sadly I suspect no-one will be charged.
The selfishness of people who commit these crimes is breathtaking.
In 2012, a Brighton man had to pay more than $20,000 after neighbours filmed him removing tree branches outside his home. Probably a pittance to someone who lives in Brighton.
And in neighbouring Hampton about 26 trees and 120 metres of underbrush were poisoned and killed with herbicide in 2021.
Do you think the people who chop down trees for their view should be fined more?
