Time to stock up on chicken as workers at Australia’s largest poultry processors Inghams are preparing to strike for a pay rise.

The union is asking for an 18 per cent pay rise over three years and more than 1000 workers will walk off the job on Friday. This equates to about an extra $1.50 an hour.

If an agreement can’t be struck, more industrial action should be expected. As such a major supplier, any shortage of chicken will immediately affect big retailers and food outlets such as Woolworths and Coles, KFC and McDonalds.

The United Workers Union said Inghams could afford the boost after recently raking in major profits on the back of chicken price increases.

Net profits of the $1 billion company surged by 72 per cent in the 2023 financial year to $60.4 million.

Inghams flagged in August consumers could expect another increase in prices soon.

Do you eat a lot of chicken? Will this effect you?
