Poppy seeds are being urgently recalled around Australia after 32 people, including a man who went into cardiac arrest, were poisoned by a dangerous chemical.

The recall was issued after discovering contaminated products sold at Coles stores in recent weeks. Shoppers are urged to check their pantries for the affected product, Basfoods’ Royal Fields Poppy Seeds with a best before date of 25 June 2024.

This particular batch of poppy seeds, previously recalled in November 2022, was found to have re-entered the supply chain. It is not safe to consume, and individuals who have purchased this recalled batch are advised to throw it out or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.

In November, the same Basfoods product was recalled at Woolworths and Coles due to poisonings caused by the presence of the highly toxic chemical thebaine.

Other brands, including Hoyts’, Eumarrah, East West Foods Wholesale, Gaganis, and Uttam poppy seeds, were also believed to be potentially contaminated.

Symptoms reported after consuming the contaminated seeds can be severe, including muscle cramping, spasms, abnormal movements, seizures, and even cardiac arrest.
