I notice the senate is conducting an inquiry into the possibility of supermarket price gouging, good for them.

But there is something else they could take a look at, financial compensation for cancelled or delayed flights in Australia.

Last week was apparently a horror week on the eastern seaboard as flights were cancelled or delayed up and down the country.

We had first-hand experience at this when our son’s flight to the Gold Coast was cancelled as we drove to the airport. Several of his friends’ flights were cancelled twice.

Thankfully we swiftly got another flight the following day, but guess what, there would be no chance we could be compensated for the lost night’s pre-paid accommodation.

I read one report where a family’s flight was cancelled three days running and they missed a family wedding.

Australia has some very weak consumer laws around travel and it’s time that changed.
The only time these big companies sit up and take notice is when it costs them, maybe then they will act.

What do you think, should compensation laws be updated and fines increased?

I cannot believe in this day and age we are letting big companies rule us. What is government doing about it? The problem is that so many of those in government, or their parties as a whole, have been backed by some of these companies and are averse to upsetting the ‘apple cart’ of financial support. Looking at the profits of most of these companies and the enormous salaries of their CEO’s indicates something is not right. MP’s are elected to represent the people and when so many of us are left in the lurch through cancellations without compensation, it would appear these MP’s are siding with the companies and profit instead of those who put them in power. It doesn’t take much to change the rules and put the onus on airlines or provide appropriate financial compensation.
