Is coffee the most scrutinised food product ever? How much is too much? When should you drink it? Are there really health benefits? Milk or no milk? Which milk?
Then there are coconut products: milks, water, oils, flour and so on. Some say that coconut oil has a variety of health benefits. Some also say that adding coconut oil to your coffee is a health boon.
Health and nutrition website MindBodyGreen says that by drinking coconut oil and coffee together, you harness the benefits of each.
MBG says that caffeine sources such as coffee and espresso are adenosine blockers1 and that adenosine is a neurotransmitter that promotes sleepiness. The caffeine locks into the adenosine receptors, blocking sleepiness in the brain. At the same time, caffeine stimulates the release of energising neurotransmitters such as dopamine.
Coconut oil is a plant-based fat source that is high in saturated fats that are metabolised quickly, providing quick fuel for the body.
“Adding coconut oil to your coffee can limit some of the unpleasant jitters you may have if consuming coffee on its own and coconut oil adds a buttery, smooth taste to coffee, as well as giving additional health benefits,” says MBG.
