Micro-breweries have popped up in most cities and many regional towns in recent years – testament to our love of beer. But which state or territory leads the pack in the beer drinking stakes?
An analysis by Me&U of the total amount of beers ordered per state over the past year, reveals a clear winner – Queensland.
Queenslanders accounted for a whopping 36 per cent of all beer sales in Australia.
In second place was NSW, with 24 per cent of the nation’s beer sales, while at the other end of the spectrum was Tasmania with just 1 per cent of total beer sales. Bizarrely, the research failed to fill in the gaps, even omitting Victoria where Premier Dan Andrews famously told residents to “get on the beers”.
When it comes to the distribution of craft beer drinkers, NSW was tops with 30 per cent followed by Victoria and Queensland with 22 per cent. Then came: South Australia (8 per cent), Western Australia and the ACT (7 per cent), Tasmania (4 per cent) and the NT (1 per cent).
Despite this golden era of micro-breweries and craft beer, lager stands tall as the undisputed beer of choice across the country.
Tasmania led the charge here, followed by NT.
Great Northern has fast become one of the most popular beer brands, securing the top spot in the ACT and NT, second place in Queensland, third in South Australia, as well as being the overall best-selling beer. The same can be said about pale ale Balter XPA, which came second in NSW and Tasmania, third in Victoria and the ACT.
