Remember that John West ad: It’s the fish that John West rejects that makes John West the best’?
Well, comparison site Canstar Blue rejects that statement and, after reviewing canned tuna, has declared a winner.
It’s Sirena Tuna. Canstar testers gave Sirena five stars for taste, texture, packaging convenience and overall satisfaction, four stars for variety and range, and three stars for value for money.
The top five in order were: Sirena, John West, Greenseas, Woolworths and Tassal.
But is canned fish good for us?
Yes, says Canstar. “Tinned fish and canned tuna especially can be healthy, since tuna itself is a good source of protein and calcium, which is good for maintaining healthy bones and teeth. Tuna also contains vitamin D, which helps the immune system and brain function, plus B vitamins to keep your eyes, skin and nervous system healthy.”
It does caution that canned tuna also usually contains more sodium than fresh and tinned fish in brine or spring water is better than fish in oil.
