Why are they bothering bringing back Neighbours?

It appears Netflix has thrown Neighbours a lifeline and agreed to restart production, which is good news for the staff and cast, but I have to ask … why?

I haven’t watched the show since the 80s, none of the younger people I know watch it, indeed I can confidently say no one I know watches it.

It has been a breeding ground for acting talent over the years, Guy Pearce, Margot Robbie, Kylie Minogue, Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth to name a few, but I’d be hard pressed to name any of the current cast.

I understand it was surviving on the fees paid by the UK broadcaster to keep it alive, when that was not renewed, it was cancelled.

It’s going to need a complete overhaul to get Australia viewers back on board and given the current lack of investment in free-to-air television, I can’t see that happening.

If you consider the viewing audience in Australia, England, and many European countries, there are still millions of fans. It is true that ratings figures are not as high as they once were, but they are still enough to make it worthwhile continuing the production.
