Diet guru Dr Michael Mosley says it’s not good to drink coffee first thing in the morning. He says there are five important activities you should do before your first jolt of caffeine.

Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can trigger the release of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, and can wreak havoc on your gut, hormones, and adrenals. This would reverse the intended effect of coffee leaving you feeling less than energetic. Dr Mosley reckons you should have coffee after breakfast.

Your body needs fluids after waking up, so having a large glass of room temperature water is recommended before coffee.

It’s also best to have your coffee after morning exercise. Consuming coffee before a workout may cause anxiety or shakiness, especially if you’re lifting heavy weights.

It’s also best to wait 90 minutes after waking up before having caffeine. This allows for the most balanced cortisol awakening response, which influences your immune health and energy levels throughout the day.

And instead of relying on caffeine to wake you up, try getting some sunshine. This can help regulate your circadian rhythm and trigger a healthy release of cortisol to support your body’s natural rhythm.

You probably already do a lot of these things before you have coffee (if you even drink coffee). But doing even one or two will be better for you than drinking a brew straight after you wake.

What’s your ideal way to start the day? Is coffee a p[art of your morning ritual?
