We love and the return to warmer weather and outdoor activities – camping, bushwalking, or firing up the barbie in the backyard. Buit along with spring comes mosquitoes. They can bugger right off!

A startling finding from a recent survey conducted by Bug Bite Thing, found that over 70% of Australians feel we are irresistible to these tiny creatures. Half attribute this to body heat, sweat, and odour as primary lures, whilst fewer think it’s got something to do with blood type. A slight portion (10%) accredit it to our body’s emissions of carbon dioxide.

Wildlife Scientist, Ellie Sursara, says it’s not our blood type, body odour, or diet that mark us as targets, but the levels of carbon dioxide we exude, that is our undoing.

Ms Sursara has further advice on how to safeguard yourself from mosquitoes this Spring/Summer:
Ellie also offers some valuable tips for Australians looking to minimise mosquito encounters this Spring/Summer:

1.Wear Light-Coloured Clothing: Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colours. Opt for light-coloured clothing to reduce your visibility to these pests.

2.Eliminate Standing Water: Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Regularly empty containers, such as flowerpots and gutters, to eliminate breeding sites.

3.Install Screens: Use screens on doors and windows to keep mosquitoes out of your living spaces.

What’s your trick to stick it to mozzies?

Use the fault that allegedly allows mozzies to breed as a method to almost eliminate them in your environment. Leave a number of shallow dishes with water outside but ensure that every 5-7 days the water is thrown onto dry soil. Rinse and refill the dishes. In this way mozzies are attracted to lay eggs in the water but the young ones never make it to maturity. It’s cheap, environmentally friendly using no chemicals and works.
