The retailer was initially bewildered, saying a shortage of sex dolls had never happened in the company’s 30-year history – especially given the lifelike dolls cost at least $3000 and up to $5500.
But after seeing a social media post, it worked out why.
The sudden spike in sales, all of them in Melbourne, was because they were being bought as travel partners for commuters using the Eastern Freeway. A second ‘person’ in the car meant the vehicle could use the transit lane and most likely avoid a nasty fine.
“The awful traffic on the Eastern has resulted in a coup for us. People are buying dolls so they can use the much faster transit lane,” said Wild Secrets marketing manager Adam Lea.
He believes the idea stemmed from an image of one of the dolls, ‘Donna’, who is shown in a car in marketing promotion. A photo of what appears to be a sex doll seated in the passenger seat of a car travelling in the transit lane has gone viral on Reddit.
Cheeky tactic or just plain smart?
