I can’t imagine what supermarket giant Woolworths is paying for its latest ‘game-changer’ and I can’t imagine why it feels the need to make this switch.

Self-serve checkouts at selected stores across Australia are being colour-coded. Can you guess why? Could it be for those with more than 10 items in their basket? For the vision-impaired?

No, self-checkouts are being coded grey and green – to make the “shopping experience easier” – depending on how you want to pay.

The dark grey registers are suitable for shoppers who are planning to use card only; the lime green registers are for customers who would like to purchase their groceries with cash or a card. Some were already clearly labelled card-only, but …

Hmmm, will you just shop at the register that will get you ‘outta’ there the fastest?

I don’t use the self-serve registers as I prefer to be served by a real person.

I still can’t understand why they don’t make all the checkouts cash or card, wouldn’t that be simpler. Not being pushed to one side because you want to what use cash and no confusion which machine you can and can’t use. I think it’s a no brainer. Obviously I must be a bit dim, perhaps I applied for a job in the Government. Cheers Jacka.

I agree Jacka. My daughter who works there has to ask cash or card and often after putting their things through on a card register they say” But I wanted to pay cash, Can you tell me what my card number is?”

I don’t care what colour they are as long as there is an equal number that takes cash as those that take cards. That is the problem, not what colour they are.
