Victorians can now build a granny flat on their property without planning permission.
The laws came into being this week and cover dwellings under 60 square metres on properties of 300 square metres or larger where there are no flooding or environmental overlays.
There will be no restrictions how the second dwelling can be used, so they can be used for a family member or rented out.
They will still require a building permit and will need to meet setback and siting requirements and cannot be subdivided or sold off from the main home.
The new laws are designed to ease housing pressures and remove some of the red tape.
State minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny said: “Small second homes are an important part of our bold planning reforms – as we get on with building 800,000 new homes in Victoria over the next decade – ensuring Victorians can live where they want to live and close to family.”
I think it’s a welcome change, you can’t even build a small pergola in my council without permission.
Would this change your mind about building a granny flat?
