Would you be willing to scan your face to pay for goods and services? A survey has found most Aussies would be willing to try facial recognition payment technology (FRPT) – but they have serious concerns around their privacy.
FRPT is already in use in many countries around the world. It works in a similar manner to paying with your phone, but instead a scan of your face is linked with your payment details. Proponents of the system say it’s actually more secure, since you are the only one with your unique face and should be a secure as fingerprint technology.
The survey, conducted by Queensland University of Technology (QUT), found mostly positive responses to the technology, but only in situations where a genuine case existed for their use.
“It’s fast, it’s convenient and if your hands are full, or you leave your wallet at home you’re able to make those purchases,” QUT Professor Gary Mortimer told The New Daily.
Prof. Mortimer said most participants could see pros and cons to the technology’s use.
“The security stuff and the privacy stuff was really interesting because it was a double-edged sword,” he said.
“Participants said they would prefer to use this method because they know someone could steal their card – and use it – but they can’t steal their face.
“But the other side was they were really concerned who would hold the data – would the retailer hold the data? Would the bank?”
I don’t know, I’m not sure I’m entirely convinced yet. What do you think? Would you be willing to pay with your face?
