Shoppers and farmers are invited to have their say on supermarket prices as part of an independent review of the food and grocery conduct code.
The review is set to close on 29 February.
Assistant minister for competition Andrew Leigh said the review would look at whether the code is ensuring that both suppliers and consumers are getting a fair deal.
“A competitive sector benefits the suppliers who get a fair price for their work and ultimately consumers who see the effects through lower prices.”
Agriculture Minister Murray Watt said it was vital everyone in the sector was treated fairly and that families pay a fair price at the checkout.
“Many farmers have talked to me about how hard they find it to deal with the supermarket chains and the lack of transparency that exists in those negotiations,” he said.
The voluntary code of conduct has four signatories – Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and Metcash – and their suppliers are automatically covered.
Greater competition between supermarkets would lead to higher prices for suppliers and lower prices for consumers, Mr Emerson said.

Each week, my money buys less. I buy basics only – I do all my own cooking.
But I am coeliac and allergic to yeasts, and a few other foodstuffs as well, plus have to buy low sugar, low salt, low fat goods – due to medical factors.
It makes the food very expensive, all over.
And I have only the pension – having 2 cancers used all my savings. (I am trying to become debt free as well.
Even eating 2 meals a day, no snacks, no desserts, I am running out of grocery money. -

As I need to have products Gluten Free, I find large difference in price from regular same products. Besides higher price, packaging is usually smaller.
I believe this is very unfair & discriminatory to anyone with health issues.
There are probably similar problems for diabetics & other diet related health problems.
It is not my fault that I have this Gluten Sensitivity so why should I be so disadvantaged? -
