So it’s taken the return of a Labor government to bring us the NBN we could have had years ago.
The LNP wasted billions of dollars building their inferior network which now has to be upgraded when it should have been done right in the first place.David RyderParticipantUntil such time as children are issued cards we will need cash for things like tuckshop.
David RyderParticipantKeeping your software up to date is very important but so is rebooting your hardware.
A daily reboot is a good idea.David RyderParticipantSome alcohol can make your partner look more desirable.
7 July 2023 at 10:07 am in reply to: Tour cancelled! Donald Trump Jr. puts end to his Aussie travels #1805539David RyderParticipantThe organisers of his tour are playing this visa issue for the publicity.
They was no delay with his visa which reportedly came through in the usual time it takes although maybe he expected special treatment to get it faster.
I also doubt the claims from the promotors that ticket sales had gone well.David RyderParticipantThe Coalition should stick to it’s antiquated and false belief that free market capitalism is the answer to everything.
Then it can go the way of all dinosaurs.David RyderParticipantOur cat costs about $5 a week to feed and maybe another $2 weekly to cover her quarterly flea and worm treatments.
She is free to roam but chooses to never leave our yard. Sleeps on our bed most nights. Catches the odd rat or mouse and very rarely a lizard or bird which our large yard in a regional town is full of anyway.
So I don’t agree with anything the article states because it does not apply to our situation and experience with the cat.David RyderParticipantNo more immigration unless the immigrant can demonstrate they have arranged somewhere to live before arriving here.
Plus end all tax concessions for housing speculators to get house prices and rents to fall.David RyderParticipantI am 73 and based on my life experience very few people should be working full time after 70. Part time OK but not full time as your energy levels drop.
As for working past 80, if you even live that long, IMO anyone doing so should have to pass an annual cognitive test.David RyderParticipantEasy, you let school’s dish out real punishments for disrespectful behaviour that can be enforced.
Same for disrespectful parents, with fines for parents who interfere in unacceptable ways.
If that fails to improve student behaviour then suspension and/or expulsion for repeat offenders.
Let the parents try home schooling them.David RyderParticipantI had a Sony 65 inch TV fail after two years. It came with the standard one year warranty but I expected a big brand name TV to last for several years at least. So I contacted Sony and the best they would do is sell me another one at a big discount. Unacceptable I told them.
So it went to the dump and I purchased a lesser known cheaper brand that came with a full three year warranty plus as a special offer the retailer added another two years for free making it a five year warranty.
And I only buy appliances now that come with a long warranty. Last year I scored a seven year warranty on a new refrigerator and five years on a washing machine both being mid range brands. The washing machine has already had two free service calls to fix minor faults under the warranty.
The standard one year warranty is not enough today because even the big brand products are poor quality and don’t last.David RyderParticipantJust another assault on an individual’s right to free choice by the nanny state.
David RyderParticipantIf the planet as we know it is to survive then the overpopulation by the human species must end.
David RyderParticipantFox and Sky News are a disgrace to journalism.
They should be made to apologise to all the people they fool into believing their falsehoods are facts.
And there should be a way of forcing news organisations to make it clear whether they are publishing opinions or news.David RyderParticipantFor ordinary letters three times a week would suffice.
But for Express letters daily would remain essential.
I have noticed our postie delivers a lot of small parcels including Xpress parcels along with the letters so they will still need to be making daily deliveries and may as well deliver letters daily too. So I can’t see where there would be much saving in the proposed cut back.16 February 2023 at 11:23 am in reply to: Should we turn off the tax dollar tap to private schools? #1790040David RyderParticipantThere is a variety of reasons some parents choose private schooling for their children and federal funding should be the same for each child be they at a public or private school or even doing home schooling.
But no state funding should be going to private schools. State funding is for the public schools which have to try to educate all kids including the ones excluded from private schools.
Academically there is little difference between private and public schools, it’s a myth that kids get a better education at private schools. The smart kids do well and the dumb kids fail whatever school they attend.
The private schools generally have better student behaviour at school but away from school there is little, if any, difference.
Personally, having attended both decades ago, I think private schooling is a waste of parents money.David RyderParticipantThis problem has been growing for generations and it’s not confined to Alice Springs. Other places like Townsville have similar problems though not as badly yet. And I say yet because it’s only going to get worse while government law and order policies are written by sociologists in Capital cities and the politicians just go along with them.
I live in a regional area of FNQ and I see what is happening first hand. Most of these troublesome youths and kids are neglected at home and don’t see much of a future for themselves. They group together in the streets and urge each other on to cause a disturbance or do a robbery because it’s become a fun thing to do in their eyes. Except in some cases where the parents or older relatives facilitate them doing robberies on their behalf because there are few consequences for youth and kids who get caught. The kids get peer status by doing things like stealing cars.
The quick solution is harsher penalties including youth imprisonment to get the worst offenders off the streets however governments and courts are reluctant to take that step partly because the prisons are already full and they don’t want the expense of building new ones and partly because of input from Uni graduate sociologists who think the methods they are taught at Uni actually work.
So they fiddle around with half measures like liquor restrictions instead of taking the more socially unpalatable steps that are needed.
In the longer term societal/cultural changes are needed to overcome two generations of anti-social culture which has been instilled in some groups of people from an early age. That will take decades to carry out if it’s even possible as the horse may have bolted.David RyderParticipantWow what a rant. You left out that 16 and 17 year olds can be in the work force and paying taxes.
On that ground alone they should be voting.David RyderParticipantThat sounds like many adult voters to me.
David RyderParticipantIf a 16 YO is interested in voting then I think they should be able to do so. Make it optional for 16 and 17 year olds. Some of them are better politically informed than many adults who vote.
