Poppa BearParticipant
I am not a big fan of any type of fast food, but the chicken salads at McDonalds are really good. And their coffee is excellent, especially when obtained under their “spend $4 and get a free coffee” policy for seniors!
And at the risk of starting a debate, I have no issue with Israeli outlets offering free meals to their military. Israel is a very small nation, surrounded by many VERY hostile neighbours whose only intention is to wipe them out. I think that is called genocide?
I am distressed at the number of civilian casualties in this current conflict, but Israel did not start it. They are simply making sure that Hamas can never again repeat what they did to Israel last October.Poppa BearParticipantIf there are plenty of empty tables, and he has bought a coffee, then why not look after your regular customers by letting them stay at their table?
Different if they have finished their coffee/snack/meal and there are people waiting for a table – the cafe is there to provide food and drinks, and needs to do so in order to stay in business. The free internet is only provided to attract paying customers.Poppa BearParticipantIt also depends which section of the library held the book. In particular, if it contains material suitable for adults, but is available for children to read, or borrow, then that needs to be addressed. Our kids face enough pressure already without adding more, especially in the sexual area.
If this book falls into this category, then I would commend the Council for trying to protect our kids.Poppa BearParticipantAs a Christian minister, I firmly believe in the power of prayer. In a Parliamentary setting, it can be a powerful reminder of our Christian heritage, and the massive good that has come from Christians through the centuries (as Peter said above.)
However, I also recognise that many Parliamentarians do not share my beliefs, and to have them say the Lord’s Prayer when they don’t believe in the God to whom it is directed, risks reducing it to a meaningless babble, or a “nice” ceremony, when prayer is much more than that.
Genuine prayer, yes please. Empty phrases because it’s “what we do” – no thank you.Poppa BearParticipantNever tried that one. However, I do know that keeping a sheet of paper towel in the lettuce container in the fridge certainly seems to keep the lettuce fresher and crisper. And putting a sheet of paper towel in with a loaf of bread before freezing it, seems to improve the quality of the bread when you thaw it out, stops it going soft and mushy from the moisture as it thaws.
Poppa BearParticipantI think that it is important for everyone to have at least a basic understanding of other people’s points of view, including religious beliefs, to promote greater unity within our communities. Obviously, as a practising Christian, I would love for everyone to know God in the deep, personal way that I do. I made a decision to follow Jesus over 50 years ago, and have never regretted it. However, I also recognise that not everyone wants to do that, and I respect their decisions, even when I don’t agree with them.
Several hundred years ago the French philosopher, Blaise Pascal, apparently said “I disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it.”
If what I believe is the truth, then it can withstand any criticism. And if it is not the truth, then I would want to know, so that I can find the truth.26 August 2022 at 1:07 pm in reply to: PM announces royal commission into ‘robodebt’ scheme #1712744Poppa BearParticipantWhat is the current PM trying to rake up? This scheme was withdrawn as soon as the courts had determined it was illegal, and the wrongly-issued debts were to be repaid in full. As long as that did in fact happen (???) what extra can be gained by the expense of a Royal Commission?
Put the money into education and hospitals!
Poppa BearParticipantI agree with you Sophie, that during the early days of the pandemic there was a lot of uncertainty, so it’s not surprising that some decisions were made which, in hindsight, turned out to be unnecessary. I would put the PM’s actions in that category.
However, also like you, I don’t understand why those decisions were kept secret. NOT a good idea!
At the very least, he should apologise for his actions. As to whether or not he should leave Parliament, I’d leave that up to his party. If they reprimand him, fine him, whatever, well and good, let’s move on. But if they endorse his actions, that would tell the Australian public that his attitude extends far beyond just his office!
19 July 2022 at 11:05 am in reply to: Where to buy your appliances and the retailers to avoid #1712200Poppa BearParticipantBought a rotary clothes line at Bunnings recently. Took 2 extra trips to the store to get it delivered (for $80!!!) and another 2 trips to arrange installation. Both of which they promote as available.
Bought a leaf blower 2 months ago, about to go back for the THIRD time to try to get a dust bag for it. Optional extra yes, but try actually getting one!
Lower prices may well be the beginning, but it goes rapidly downhill from there.
Poppa BearParticipantSimilar method is also useful for scrambled eggs. Whisk the egg/s with a dash of water, microwave for about 30 seconds, plus 30 seconds per egg, and viola! Scrambled eggs with no messy measuring out milk, butter, etc. Add your own spices or pepper for varied tastes.
