Lost National Insurance number

Rosanne thinks she might be eligible for a UK state pension but doesn’t know her National Insurance number to enable her to find out.

Q. Rosanne
I am trying to contact the UK to get an estimate on how much of a pension I would receive. We moved to Australia in 1994 and my husband and I both worked full time in the UK up until then. I need my National Insurance Number but I don’t know how to get it. Can you please tell me how I can find out?

A. You can contact the National Insurance helpline in the UK, and providing you can answer a few questions, you should be able to retrieve it this way. You won’t be given the number over the phone, but you will receive a letter of confirmation, which may take some time to arrive. You should obviously note that it may be quite expensive to call the UK, and it may be a long telephone call. The number is +44 (0)300 200 3502.

If you don’t want to make the call, or are not able to answer the necessary questions, you can complete form number CA5403 and send it to the address on the form. You can download the form at www.gov.uk.
