Worst foods to have in your fridge

If you’re diet conscious, trying to cut down on sugar, or on a bit of a health kick, then it may be high time to ditch these eight common foods found in most fridges.

1. Tomato sauce (or ketchup)
About a quarter of your bottle of tomato sauce consists of sugar. So, if you’re trying to lose weight, you may wish to try your food without the sauce.

2. Mayonnaise
Just one tablespoon of mayo has 110 calories. Maybe try Dijon mustard instead – it only contains 15 calories per tablespoon and has a healthy flavour kick, too.

3. Flavoured yoghurt
A single serve of flavoured yoghurt contains three times the amount of sugar as plain yoghurt. You’re better off adding some fresh (or frozen) berries and nuts for less sugar, more fibre and nutrients. Also, full-fat yoghurt will stave off hunger pangs better than low-fat yoghurt, which may help you to lose weight.

4. Soft drinks
Not only are they full of empty calories, they also have absolutely no nutritional value. Try mineral water with a squeeze of lemon or lime instead.

5. Tonic water
Even tonic water is loaded with sugar. The quinine used to flavour tonic water adds up to more than 124 calories per 375ml can. Better off with soda water and lime instead.

6. Cream-based salad dressing
Non-diet versions are high in fat, but low-fat are usually high in sugar, salt or artificial sweeteners. In other words, you just can’t win with creamy salad dressings. If you want something to flavour your leafy greens, why not try olive oil, sea salt and a splash of vinegar?

7. Fancy ice-cream
Those gourmet ice-creams are loaded with fat and sugar – sometimes more than double regular ice-cream. For a quick sweet fix, try plain yoghurt with berries and nuts. So much healthier! Or, if you really need an ice-cream fix, at least check the label before you buy.

8. Beer
It’s nice to have some cold beers at hand. And if you can stick to one or two at a time, you’re probably okay. But if finishing a six-pack a day is more your thing, then it may be best to not have them so readily available. They’re darn tasty, but they’re full of sugar and empty calories and, as many of you are aware, excessive alcohol intake is linked to all manner of health problems.
