Ice baths, once a luxury reserved for professional athletes, have now permeated the mainstream consciousness, thanks to their purported advantages ranging from reduced inflammation to enhanced mental resilience.

The concept of cold water immersion therapy is simple yet profound. By submerging the body in water temperatures between 10°C and 15°C for short periods, typically 10 to 20 minutes, individuals can reportedly experience a range of health benefits.

Dutch motivational speaker Wim Hof, also known as ‘The Iceman’, has been a vocal proponent of this practice, claiming it can lower heart rate, reduce stress levels, and even prevent sickness due to improved blood flow and nutrition delivery to cells.

However, in a study published in Nature Scientific Reports, participants were asked to try the Wim Hof method for 15 days. They reportedly tried cold water exposure alongside breathing exercises and meditation, but the study revealed that no positive changes in their blood pressure, heart rate and function, and mood were recorded.

Meanwhile, in a different study on 3,018 office workers who added 30- to 90-second blasts of cold water to their morning routines for 60 days, the results seemed promising.

The participants reportedly experienced 29 per cent fewer sick days and had increased energy levels.

As with any wellness trend, it’s crucial to proceed with caution. Consulting with a healthcare professional before beginning cold water therapy is always advised to ensure it’s safe for your individual health circumstances.

For those new to cold therapy, starting with a cold shower might be a wise approach to acclimate the body to lower temperatures before diving into an ice bath. It’s important to keep the water temperature within the recommended range and to limit initial exposure to just a few minutes.
