Do your mornings usually feel tiring, rushed or stressful? Have you ever stopped to think why? Perhaps these five steps will help you to start off your day the right way.
1. Leave that snooze button alone!
I know this one (and you’ve probably heard it too), but I can’t help myself now and then. When we keep hitting the snooze button, all it does is make us feel more drowsy and sleepy, because sleeping in between the alarm bells throws off our sleep cycle.
2. Make the first light natural light
Instead of blue light from your smart device in the morning, let natural light be the first light that your eyes see when you wake. Sunlight gives your body the extra stimulusit needs to understand that it’s time to wake up and start the day.
3. Avoid checking your emailsupon waking
It’s also best to avoid your smart device when you wake, as it can sidetrack you from getting ready and out the door in time. Not only that, it can also ‘set you off’ if you receive negative news, as well as put other people’s priorities before your own.
4. Eat brekkie
You knew this one had to be on the list, right?A healthy breakfast is a surefire way to get your day started right. If oats or eggs are not your thing, trysome fruit with natural yoghurt and a few nuts, or a smoothie, can do the trick too. Even a light breakfast is better than no breakfast at all.
5. Get your routine down pat
Ifyou get your routine down pat, you’ll know exactly how much time you need to get out the door and, consequently, when to get out of your bed. But give yourself an extra 15 minutes for any potential mishaps (e.g. spilling breakfast on your clothes). The other benefit of sticking to a strict morning routine is that you are less likely to be distracted.
But remember, one of the major steps to starting your morning right is to get enough sleep.
