The power of friendship is a theme that resonates deeply with many of us, and it’s a bond that can stand the test of time. This is beautifully illustrated by the story of four women—Marion Bamforth, Sue Morris, Carol Ansbro, and Mary Helliwell—who have shown the world that true friendship doesn’t just last, it thrives and inspires.
In 1972, these four friends, then 17-year-old high school classmates from Halifax in the north of England, embarked on a holiday to the seaside town of Torquay, Devon. It was a trip filled with the vitality of youth—laughs, late nights, flirting, sunburn, and the sharing of secrets. A roving photographer captured a moment of their joy: the four women, arm-in-arm, smiling and laughing, with the backdrop of a beach promenade and a classic 1960s Ford Corsair. Dressed in mini-skirts and thongs, they epitomised 1970s teenage freedom and style.

Fast forward over 50 years, and these women have remained steadfast friends through life’s myriad twists and turns. They’ve supported each other through careers, love, family life, heartbreak, and grief. Their friendship has been a constant, a source of strength and comfort, and a repository of cherished memories.
To celebrate their 70th birthdays, they revisited Torquay and recreated that iconic 1972 photo—a testament to their enduring bond.
Initially, there was some hesitation, especially at the thought of donning outfits reminiscent of their teenage years, particularly in the chilly autumn weather. But Sue Morris, the group’s archivist and memory keeper, convinced them it would be a fun and meaningful way to mark their milestone birthdays.
The preparation for the photo recreation involved a treasure hunt for vintage clothing that would echo their original outfits. Thrift stores and online second-hand sales became their hunting grounds. The day of the photoshoot saw them huddled in a public bathroom, swapping their warm coats for summer dresses and bright blouses, helping each other with hair and outfits, and sharing laughter that echoed their teenage giddiness.
With the help of hotel staff and a couple of other friends, they found the exact spot where the original photo was taken.
The recreated photo was a success, capturing the same spirit of camaraderie and joy as the original. Seeing the two photos side by side was an emotional moment for the women, a poignant reflection of the journey they had shared.
Their story, after being published in the Halifax Courier, quickly captured the hearts of people on social media, spreading far and wide. It became a source of inspiration, encouraging others to reconnect with old friends and perhaps recreate their own cherished memories.
The secret to their lasting friendship, according to Morris, is making time for each other, even when life’s obligations pull you in different directions. Despite the distance—Ansbro now spends much of her time in Spain—the group stays connected through WhatsApp and video calls, sharing laughs and planning future get-togethers.
Their next adventure is already on the horizon, with plans to visit Blackpool, another seaside town, with their girlfriends. The excitement of getting ready together, the anticipation of a night out, remains as vibrant now as it was when they were teenagers.
The four friends’ story is a powerful reminder that while life may change, the joy of friendship can remain a constant source of happiness and support. It’s a reminder to cherish the people who have been with us through thick and thin, to celebrate the moments we have together, and to never take for granted the bonds that make life truly rich.
