It was a scene so shocking that it earned Last Tango in Paris a ban in most countries. And now director Bernardo Bertolucci has made the shocking admission that the actress Maria Schneider didn’t know anything about the infamous butter rape scene.
Both Bertolucci and Schneider’s co-star, Marlon Brando, concocted the idea and decided that it would look more real if Schneider was caught unawares.
Unsurprising, Schneider, who was only 19 at the time, said she felt “ a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci.”
Surely such deception is never acceptable, even in the name of art?
