Australia named as one of the top global havens for expats!

Several cities in Australia made it on the list of destinations with the highest appeal to expats from all corners of the globe.

According to Allianz’s Expat Guide to Living in Australia, expats now make up a significant 30 percent of Australia’s population, many of which were drawn by the country’s robust job market and high quality of life.

Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Canberra, and Adelaide, were reportedly among the top 30 cities that stood out among expats.

In over 450 assessed cities, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, Canberra, and Adelaide took the 12th, 20th, 29th, and 30th spots, respectively.

According to The Australian Financial Review, the nation’s employment growth reportedly reached a 16-month high in September alone. With a record number of more than 64,000 people joining the workforce, Australia cements itself as a land of opportunity.

In April, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) conducted a separate study and surveyed over 150,000 professionals across 188 countries and crowned Australia as the number one destination for professionals looking to relocate internationally.

The majority of the respondents recogniszed Australia’s post-pandemic jobs boom as a key factor in its newfound top spot.

Following the ‘Land Down Under’ in the top 10 of BCG’s survey are the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, France and Spain.

Meanwhile, topping Mercer’s list was Zurich. Switzerland’s largest city reportedly appealed to expats for its exceptional public services, low crime rates, commitment to sustainability, improved global connectivity, and enhanced airport connections, among many others.

Vienna, Geneva, Copenhagen, and Auckland follow closely behind at the second to fifth spots on the list. Also included in the top 10 are Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Vancouver, Bern, and Basel.

In Asia, Singapore remains the highest-ranked city despite dropping to 30th place, tying with Adelaide in Australia.

In the United States, Boston leads at the 32nd spot, with Los Angeles making a significant leap to 44th, and New York at 45th.

Meanwhile, in the UK, London climbed to the 40th rank, while Edinburgh made it to the 50th spot.

‘In an era of digital nomads and flexible working, Mercer’s data shows that the most desirable destinations are those that blend a high quality of life and an affordable cost of living’, said Yvonne Traber, Mercer’s global mobility leader.

‘This presents a challenge for organisations and international assignees as they balance decisions related to relocation, investment, and talent management,’ she added.
