Bars for boomers

Isn’t it nice to find a bar where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine or your favourite beer? Unfortunately, many bars cater specifically for the younger market, so where do you head if you still enjoy a drink in the evening without having to fight your way through a gang of 20-somethings?

We’ve listed three of what we consider to be somgst the best bars for boomers and would love to hear if you’ve been to any of them, or indeed, can recommend some of your own.

Toorak Cellars, Beatty Avenue, Armadale, Vic
Even though this boutique wine bar is the brainchild of a 20-something, it hits all the high notes for those who like to enjoy a nice glass of wine, a locally produced gin, or a cold bottle of beer. An outside space to enjoy in the summer and a roaring fire in the winter, Toorak Cellars is a bar for all seasons, literally and figuratively. You can buy wine by the glass, or if sharing with friend, choose your favourite bottle from the impressive collection on offer. Enjoyed by locals and those simply passing through, it’s worth making the 10-minute train journey from Melbourne CDB to give it a try.

Tapavino, Bulletin Place, Sydney
As the name suggests, those who enjoy the delicious tapas and its impressive wine list frequent this bar. Although food is a big draw for those visiting Tapavino, propping yourself at the bar with a glass of wine is welcomed. Tucked away in a laneway close to the Marriot Hotel, it takes a little work to find, but it’s definitely worth it. And the fact that it’s tucked away means it’s only those in the know who make it there, not the crowds of tourists and teenies you can find on nearby bars. If you’re an adventurous foodie, try the blood sausage and if you have deep pockets, there is a bottle of Faustino for $750 on the wine list. However, as this is out of the reach of many, just ask the barman to suggest a more affordable alternative.

The Cabinet Bar and Balcony, Rainbow Alley, Melbourne
Now this really is a hidden gem of Melbourne and good luck trying to find it! Although the balcony overlooks bustling Swanston Street, the entrance to this chic, Parisian-inspired bar is tucked away in the alley behind. Small, secluded and welcoming, a seat on the balcony is highly prized and you’ll have to get there early in the evening to secure one. Even then, afternoon drinkers are often reluctant to leave and vacate their vantage points. If you need to be inside, so be it – the cocktail list is extensive and there will be something to suit everyone. Food is served and the pizzas are definitely worth sharing. Oh, and just a note, the loos are unisex, so don’t be alarmed.

Let us know if you’ve visited any of these hotspots or have one of your own to share – we’d love to come and give them a try!
