As the festive season approaches, shopping centres across Australia become bustling hubs of activity. With the spirit of giving in the air, Australians are expected to spend a staggering $70 billion on gifts and food, according to the Australian Retailers Association.
The rush to find the perfect present and prepare for holiday feasts can turn shopping centres into a frenzy of stressed-out shoppers and crowded aisles. However, with a bit of etiquette and consideration for others, we can all contribute to a more pleasant shopping experience for everyone.
To help you maintain your composure and spread goodwill during your shopping trips, we’ve compiled a list of 10 secret etiquette rules, inspired by the Australian School of Etiquette director Zarife Harvey, that everyone must know.
- Strategic bag handling: Before you consider dropping off just one or two bags at your car, think of the others circling the parking lot in search of a spot. Unless you’re weighed down by your purchases, try to consolidate your trips to the car to avoid adding to the parking mayhem.
- Pram navigation: Prams can be cumbersome, but they don’t have to block others. If you’re pushing a pram, keep it to the left to allow others to easily pass by without obstruction.
- Trolley etiquette: Trolleys should always be kept to the side, and after use, return them to their designated bays. It’s a small effort that can prevent accidents, such as trolleys rolling into cars, and makes the shopping experience more convenient for everyone.
- Efficient transactions: Save time at the checkout by having your payment method ready. This small act can significantly speed up the process for everyone.
- Walking etiquette: Remember to keep to the left and walk single file when in groups. If you need to stop for a chat, step aside to let others pass. This also applies to escalators—stand to the side if you’re not walking up.
- Common courtesy: Simple acts of kindness, like holding the door open or offering a sincere apology if you accidentally bump into someone, can make a world of difference in a crowded shopping centre.
- Respectful change room use: Treat change rooms with respect. Hang up clothes you’ve tried on and leave the space tidy for the next person.
- Manners matter: Always use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ during your shopping exchanges. A friendly inquiry about a retail worker’s day can also brighten their busy shift.
- Respect operating hours: Plan your shopping trips and respect the opening and closing times of stores. Retail workers deserve to finish on time, especially during the hectic holiday season.
- Season’s greetings: Don’t hesitate to offer a cheerful ‘Merry Christmas’ or ‘Happy New Year’ at the end of your transaction. It’s a lovely way to spread festive cheer.
