Score a double pass to see Supernova

In two minutes, I was brought to tears.

That’s about how long the trailer for Supernova lasts. It’s the new movie starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci – and if the trailer is anything to go by, it may well be movie of the year.

Alzheimer’s disease is something more and more Australians will confront in the coming years. It’s already affecting around 320,000 Australians. We see the numbers all the time. We know the risks and the odds. But rarely do we see the human element so brilliantly and beautifully portrayed than you may see in Supernova.

“Love doesn’t end when the partner is ill,” was one of the comments on the trailer page.

Sam and Tusker, partners of 20 years, are travelling across England in their old campervan visiting friends, family and places from their past. Since Tusker was diagnosed with young-onset dementia their lives have changed. Jobs have been given up and plans put on hold. Their time together is now all that matters.

As Sam and Tucker’s trip progresses, however, their individual ideas for their future begin to collide. Secrets are uncovered, private plans unravel and their love for each other is tested like never before. Ultimately, they must confront the question of what it means to love one another in the face of Tusker’s irreparable illness.

Living with Alzheimer’s is challenging, to say the least. Watching a partner live with Alzheimer’s possibly even more so.

Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci portray this ordeal as equally painful and beautiful as it can possibly be.

Supernova is a moving story of two men who are deeply in love but will soon not know each other,” writes movie critic Brian Tallerico on rogerebert.com.

“One of them is aware that he’s at the precipice of the final stage of dementia, losing many of his abilities to comprehend the world around him. He won’t recognise his husband’s face or name. The other man won’t have the same problem but the man he knew and loved will be, at least in a sense, gone. They will never stop loving each other.”
