Cleaning jewellery often isn’t at the top of people’s to-do lists. However, you might find yourself more likely to keep those diamonds shining bright if you can clean them at home.
We’ll let you in on a little secret – not only can you clean your jewellery using household products – but you probably already have all of these at home. Here are five easy and inexpensive ways to keep your jewellery clean enough to see yourself in it.
1. White vinegar
For pure silver pieces, mix half a cup of white vinegar with two tablespoons of baking soda and soak for up to three hours. When you remove the jewellery it should look as good as new.
2. Beer
To clean gold jewellery, use a light coloured beer. Pour a small amount of the beer onto a cloth, before rubbing it over your gold pieces to remove dirt and any tarnishes.
3. Soda water
If diamonds are a girl’s best friend, soda water is a diamond’s best friend. Pour a glass of soda water and soak your diamonds and any other gemstones in it overnight. When you take them out the next day they should be shining even brighter than before.
4. Tomato sauce
If the white vinegar hasn’t left your silver pieces shining, it’s time to turn to tomato sauce. Due to it’s high acidity levels, tomato sauce can remove any stubborn grit that may be left behind. Simply apply the ketchup to a toothbrush and start scrubbing.
5. Vodka
Another option for cleaning diamonds and glass stones is vodka. With its ability to corrode other materials, soak a cloth in vodka and give stones a good scrub to remove any grime or dirt.
