How to wear white

White: welcome to the light side. The perfect colour for the warmer months, white is having a major moment. So what’s the best way to wear this often tricky trend?

While, as a Melbournian, black is basically a part of my DNA, there’s the odd occasion when it’s perhaps not the most appropriate colour. Say, spring and summer, for example.

Black’s polar opposite white was practically made for the warmer months. Aside from the obvious challenge, more so for some (me!), of keeping white clothing clean, it can also be a tricky colour to wear: unlike black, white isn’t as flattering or forgiving on the figure.

Thankfully these five ways to wear white will make it an easy colour to incorporate into your spring/summer wardrobe.

1. Classic white tee

A wardrobe hero, the classic white tee not only goes with everything but always looks great. Choose a style in a fit and cut that you find flattering and follow the less-is-more rule, steering clear of embellishments and other detailing. The perfect accompaniment to a pair of blue jeans, a white tee is also a fantastic layering piece to wear under shirts and jackets.

2. White jeans or pants

Ok, I’ll admit finding the right pair can be nothing short of a nightmare but, once you’ve found them, I promise you’ll practically live in white pants all summer long. Again, opt for a pair that is as plain as possible and, of upmost importance, not see-through! While this may seem obvious, there’s nothing worse than seeing people walk around in almost sheer white pants. Beware of pockets too. Seeing the outline of pockets through pants can be extremely unflattering and make you look bigger than you actually are.

Once you’ve picked a pair with which you’re happy, wear them with everything from a tee and sandals to a silk cami and heels. You can’t go past a denim jacket paired with white jeans either.

3. Lace or crotchet

Two textures that arguably look better in white. The perfect way to lighten up for the warmer months, is to invest in a white lace or crotchet top for a dressy day or evening option.

Feeling brave? Go all in and opt for a dress instead. The ‘little white dress’ gives the LBD a serious run for its money during summer.

4. With stripes

Very nautical, very summer, white and stripes are a match made in heaven whichever way you look at it. Wear a long sleeved stripe top with white jeans or pull out your classic white tee and match with a striped skirt. Just add a red accessory and you’re all set to hit the high seas!

5. White jumper

Having invested in a white jumper this Autumn, I can testify it is the perfect trans-seasonal piece. As with the tee, choose a style and fit that suits you. I went for an oversized look, and leant towards one that’s as plain as possible. It’s the answer to those slightly cooler days or nights: I wear mine with all my jeans, shorts and even over dresses. And, if you’re feeling particularly daring, wear it with your white pants. After all, there’s nothing better than an all-white ensemble for spring/summer.
