Nine ways to beat the bags

You may not always wake up feeling your freshest, but that doesn’t mean you have to sport heavy eye bags all day. Luckily, these nine tricks will help to reduce dark patches and keep you looking fresh all day.

Home remedies
While sliced cucumber, used tea bags or holding cold spoons to the bags under your eyes may seem cartoonish, they help to reduce bags. Cooling the skin around your eyes will shrink the capillaries, reducing blood flow and swelling. Just don’t get them too cold, as this may damage your vision.

Sleep the right way
Sleeping on your stomach or side can cause fluid to gather under your eyes. If you often wake up with puffy eyes try switching to sleep on your back.

Reduce your salt intake
You may find that you have particularly puffy eyes the morning after a salty meal as the water in your body gathers in areas high in sodium, according to WebMD.

Allergies
It may not be hay fever season, but your allergies can still flare up, causing puffy eyes along with other uncomfortable symptoms. It’s important to recognise these symptoms and manage them with over-the-counter medications.

Wear sunscreen
The best defensive is a good offensive. When the skin around your eyes is overexposed to UV rays it can wrinkle and sag. Wearing an everyday facial sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin from future damage.

Quit smoking
As challenging as it may be, giving up smoking is one of the best things you can do for your skin and overall health. Smoking has been linked to ageing skin and wrinkles, increasing dark bags under the eyes. For help, contact Quitline on 13 78 48.

Remove your make-up
If you go to sleep with your eye make-up on, don’t. This can cause your eyes to become irritated and react, puffing up overnight.

Drink less
Alcohol naturally dehydrates your body. When the skin around your eyes becomes dehydrated it may sag and appear darker. Either cut down on the drinking, or make sure you follow up any alcoholic drink with a glass of water so that you stay hydrated.

Concealer
While using cosmetics may be a last resort for many people, dabbing a light concealer under your eyes can be a quick and easy way to cover up eye bags before you leave the house.
