After ditching Qantas frequent flyer points in favour of the unpopular Woolworths Dollars, the supermarket giant has been forced to revamp its loyalty program. But with little fan fare, you may have missed the gems hidden in the detail.
In Woolworths’ last loyalty program iteration, Woolworths Dollars could be earned on certain products, the range of which was updated regularly, but was limited. Once you had banked $10, this was then deducted automatically from your next shopping bill. However, the products that offered the chance to earn dollars were often not everyday purchases and many customers failed to ever rack up the $10 saving.
Now, under its revamped program, the ‘Dollars’ are out and Qantas frequent flyer points are back in, but only if you choose to ‘buy’ them. Members can now collect points on every dollar spent in Woolworths, Caltex fuel stations and BWS bottle shops. When 2000 points are collected (a $2000 spend), customers can opt for an instant $10 discount or convert to 870 Qantas frequent flyer points. Extra points will be offered on certain products, such as essential household items and fresh food, and personalised offers will also be made from time to time, giving customers the chance to boost their savings.
By ‘purchasing’ Qantas frequent flyer points every 18 months, those who travel infrequently but are still keen to hold onto their frequent flyer membership, will be able to meet the terms and conditions by keeping their account active.
And here’s the best bit of the revamp – customers who dread the larger-than-usual shopping bills at Christmas can bank their savings to ease the financial burden of the festive season.
Also, Caltex fuel customers will now receive a double reward, with the ability to collect points on fuel spend, as well as claim the fuel discount loaded onto their Woolworths Rewards card when $30 is spent in store.
The revamp aligns Woolworths program more closely with its rival flybuys – offered to Coles customers – although flybuys offers more opportunities to collect points from spending with affiliated businesses.
So whether you’re looking to fly or save, you would have to agree that this is a change for the better. You can find out more at Woolworthsrewards.com.au
