In a world where communication is often cluttered with jargon and complexity, the ability to convey intricate ideas in a clear and relatable manner is a rare and valuable skill. This year, the spotlight shines on those who have mastered the art of communication, with the Reserve Bank of Australia’s Governor, Michele Bullock, leading the pack as Australia’s best communicator of 2024.
The accolade, bestowed by the esteemed public relations firm Wilkinson Butler, recognises individuals who have excelled in the art of communication across various sectors, including politics, business, and sports. The selection of Michele Bullock may come as a surprise to some, given her role often involves delivering the less-than-pleasant news about the economy’s health. However, it’s precisely her ability to articulate complex economic concepts into digestible information that has earned her this prestigious title.
Peter Wilkinson, chair of Wilkinson Butler, explains that Bullock’s challenge has been to make macroeconomics not only interesting but understandable to the average Australian. ‘She’s been able to turn macroeconomics, the complicated explanation of why interest rates have to be high, into everyday language,’ he said. Her authenticity and clarity have garnered her a level of trust among Australians, a testament to her exceptional communication skills.
Joining Bullock on the list of top communicators is Treasurer Jim Chalmers, who, despite facing scrutiny over Australia’s mid-year economic outlook, remains unflustered under pressure. His conversational style and ability to keep answers succinct and straightforward have been highlighted as his strengths. However, as Peter Wilkinson notes, ‘The difficulty he’s got now is we’ve got a massive deficit that is going to weigh him down between now and the election.’ Chalmers’ communication challenge will be to navigate through these economic headwinds with transparency and candour.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton also earned a spot among the top five communicators, defying expectations with his rise as a contender for the prime ministerial role. His communication style has been instrumental in his political journey, showcasing the power of effective messaging in the political arena.
The list is rounded out by Olympic Chef de Mission, Anna Meares, and CommBank CEO, Matt Comyn, both of whom have demonstrated exceptional communication prowess in their respective fields.
