Unlock the power of vinegar for a sparkling clean dishwasher

As we age, we often find joy in the simple things, like a sparkling clean kitchen and the satisfaction of a job well done. But let’s face it, cleaning can sometimes feel like a chore, especially when it comes to those hard-to-reach places or appliances we use every day. One such appliance is the dishwasher, a modern convenience that has become a staple in many Australian homes. However, did you know that your trusty dishwasher needs a good cleaning from time to time? That’s right, and there’s a remarkably simple and cost-effective way to do it using a household staple: vinegar.

Why your dishwasher needs a regular clean

Your dishwasher works hard to keep your dishes clean, but in the process, it can accumulate food particles, grease, and soap residue. These can cling to the interior surfaces, including the racks and spray arms, as well as the filter, leading to a less efficient machine and potentially unpleasant odours. Regular maintenance is key to ensuring your dishwasher operates at its best, and it’s easier than you might think.

The vinegar solution

Vinegar is a versatile and natural cleaning agent, known for its high acidity which makes it great for tackling grime and mineral deposits. It’s also non-toxic and inexpensive, making it an ideal choice for cleaning your dishwasher. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start by removing and cleaning the dishwasher filter. This is usually found at the bottom of the machine. Consult your owner’s manual if you’re unsure how to remove it. Give it a good scrub with soap and hot water to remove any trapped food particles.
  2. Next, find a dishwasher-safe bowl or mug that’s heavy enough to stay put during the wash cycle. Fill it with 1 cup of white vinegar. If you don’t have white vinegar on hand, apple cider vinegar can also do the trick.
  3. Place the container on the top rack of your empty dishwasher. Running the dishwasher empty ensures that the vinegar can do its job without interference from dishes or detergent.
  4. Set your dishwasher to run on a hot water cycle. As the cycle runs, the vinegar will be dispersed throughout the machine, cleaning and deodorising as it goes.

Frequency and precautions

While vinegar is a fantastic cleaning agent for your dishwasher, it’s important to use it in moderation. Due to its acidic nature, overuse can potentially damage the rubber seals and hoses in your dishwasher. To avoid this, limit your vinegar cleaning cycle to just once a month.

Also, be mindful not to pour vinegar directly into the detergent or rinse aid compartments, as it won’t be distributed properly during the wash cycle. And remember, never run a vinegar cycle with dishes or salt inside the dishwasher, as this can lead to tarnished metal items.

By incorporating this simple vinegar trick into your monthly cleaning routine, you’ll not only extend the life of your dishwasher but also enjoy the benefits of cleaner, spot-free dishes. It’s a small step that can make a big difference in the efficiency and hygiene of your kitchen.
