Consumers have their say on best TVs

If you’re in the market for a new television before Christmas, comparison site Canstar Blue has done some of the legwork for you.

Canstar Blue asked about 1200 consumers who had bought a television in the past two years to rate them on overall satisfaction, as well as picture quality, value for money, sound quality, ease of use, design and smart compatibility.

And given that the average Australian watches TV for 17 hours a week and spends $984 on a TV, selecting a set can be a weighty decision.

Samsung and Sony were named joint winners of the 2021 Customer Satisfaction Award. Samsung achieved a top rating for smart compatibility while Sony rated best for sound quality.

Canstar Blue’s home and lifestyle expert Megan Birot says the two brands were neck to neck in the ratings.

“Samsung and Sony both received five-star ratings for overall satisfaction, but it was Samsung that pulled ahead for smart compatibility while Sony stood out for its sound quality,” she said.

Samsung vice-president of consumer electronics Jeremy Senior said Australians were looking for bigger screens, more immersive sound and an easy to use Smart TV platform.

“To meet and even exceed customer expectations in these areas ultimately drives our product innovation year-on-year.

“Today, we expect more from our TVs. From bringing families together to escapism, work and play, the TV experience continues to evolve with the times.”

The comparison site said that five-star ratings were few and far between in the latest review, with most brands scoring four stars in most research categories and for overall satisfaction, while JVC landed on three stars overall. Bauhn was the only other brand to score five stars in any category, namely for value for money and ease of use, even beating Sony and Samsung on those points.

Ms Birot added that Australians looking to buy a new television in time for Christmas would benefit from TV deals on Black Friday. “Black Friday, on 26 November, is a great time for families looking to score a TV deal before Christmas. It’s worth keeping an eye out for retailers offering early Black Friday sales as well.”

Canstar Blue research reveals that the most popular reason why Australians purchased a new television in the past two years was wanting to upgrade to a Smart TV (28 per cent), followed by replacing a broken predecessor (27 per cent) and wanting to upgrade to a newer model (20 per cent).
