Five best song-identifying apps

Gone are the days of having to wait for the radio presenter to tell us the track name and artist of a song or desperately remembering and typing lyrics into Google to find the title.

These clever, intuitive and free song-identifying apps will quickly and accurately identify songs at just the click of a button.

1. Shazam

Heard a song in the car or at a café of which you just need to know the title? Shazam works by using your device’s microphone to ‘listen’ to a piece of music being played, and then matches the sample against a database in order to find a song title. It’s one of the most effective and robust song-identifying apps around; not only does it give the artist, track name, and album, but also the year the of the song and record label that produced it. The tags are stored inside the app for your referral.

Available on iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry

2. SoundHound

SoundHound can identify a song just by having you hum the tune or sing a few lyrics; It will then provide you with the information. This app is great if you’re a pretty accurate hummer, but it isn’t foolproof. Another feature of SoundHound is that you can tag a song that is playing, and it will give you the lyrics line-by-line, just like karaoke – which is great for singing along in the car!

Available on iOS, Android

3. Hound

A younger sibling of SoundHound, this app allows you to enter information verbally. Speak a track name or artist into the mic and you’ll get tour dates, biographies and the artist’s chart-topping music. This app cleverly gives you the artist’s latest tweets, Facebook updates and suggests similar artists. All this information without typing a single word!

Available on iOS, Android

4. Musixmatch

Musixmatch is a powerful lyric recognition app. All you need to do is play a song to this app and it will find the song and play through the lyrics for you to sing along. This app is known for its large catalogue of songs and great accuracy. You can tag and save lyrics and share them with friends.

Available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone

5. SpotSearch

Integrated with online music station Spotify, SpotSearch lets you identify a song by typing in a few lyrics. The app finds the song and then neatly links you to Spotify to play it. If you don’t have Spotify Premium (the paid version of the music station), the app will link you to YouTube so you can play it there instead.

Available on Android
