Slow internet to last for weeks

Australian internet users have been warned to expect significantly slower internet speeds until at least the middle of October.

A number of undersea cables linking Australia with Asia and beyond have been damaged in recent weeks by two separate typhoons. Submarine teams have been organised to fix the breakage 54km off the coast of Hong Kong.

iiNet and Internode issued the slowdown alert saying latency and packet loss problems were also likely due to traffic having to be rerouted through other cables.

“This may result in web pages taking longer to load, as well as impact to time-sensitive activities such as online gaming,” they said.

So when you’re struggling to visit an international webpage or send an email, think twice before blaming the slowdown on your ISP.
