New technology in smartphones and mobile networks are revolutionising phone call quality and speed, but when will you be able to get your hands on VoLTE?
What is it?
VoLTE stands for Voice Over Long-Term Evolution, and it’s not as complicated as it sounds. VoLTE is the process of making voice phone calls using your smartphone’s 4G network, rather than the traditional phone network.
The benefits of this new technology include crystal-clear voice calls, quick connections and virtually no lag.
Vodafone Chief Technology Officer Benoit Hanssen has said, “With VoLTE, customers will enjoy call connection times that are two to three times quicker. There’ll be virtually no lag between pressing the call button and being connected to the number you’ve dialed.”
When can you get it?
Vodafone has just finished its trials with the technology and although no exact date for launch has been revealed, the technology can be expected sometime in 2015.
Are all phones compatible?
Unfortunately, this technology is currently only available for 4G enabled smartphones. Examples of 4G ready devices include the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy s5, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. To find out if your device will be compatible, contact your phone manufacturer or service provider.
The top two competing telco companies in the United States are working together to ensure that their customers will be able to call each other on VoLTE, regardless of which company they are with. Do you think our telcos will act so civilly? Or do you think our phone networks are fine as they are?
